The French filmmaker François Ozon’s playful screen adaptation of a dark story by the British mystery writer Ruth Rendell is by turns mischievous, sentimental, subversive and silly.

Rating: 4/4 -- A wildly entertaining work, one that manages to be simultaneously funny, touching, slightly unnerving and undeniably sexy to behold, regardless of where your predilections may lie. Full Review

Rating: 2/5 -- The film devolves into a slightly timid exercise in kitsch; it's the sort of thing Pedro Almodóvar would do a lot more convincingly. Full Review

The political dynamic that would have made the film simply topical turns into a psychological dynamic that makes the film and its relationships more complicated and unpredictable. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- From the opening close-ups of a costumed bride slowly revealed to be an embalmed corpse, The New Girlfriend wants to keep you unbalanced and curious, but like a lot of Ozon films, it never quite gets out of its own head. Full Review

Rating: 2.5/4 -- It's less than it should've been, and a little mild. But Ozon makes it glide with confidence, in or out of heels. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- Though its respect for the characters and concluding vision of an unconventional family is admirable, The New Girlfriend is most convincing when simply depicting friendship. Full Review

Product Description:

Francois Ozon's humorous psychological drama THE NEW GIRLFRIEND stars Anais Demoustier as Claire, a young woman whose closest friend since childhood, Lea, passes away, leaving behind a husband named David (Romain Duris) and a newborn baby. One day Claire drops by David's house unexpectedly, and finds him feeding his baby with a bottle while dressed in his dead wife's clothes. He explains that Lea was aware of his predilection, and his relief that he's able to share his secret with someone moves both of them to create a female persona for him named Virginia. As David begins to identify more strongly as Virginia, this leads to confusing and conflicting feelings in Claire, and causes a rift between her and her husband (Raphael Personnaz). THE NEW GIRLFRIEND screened at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.
