It's an entertaining documentary, as well as a very sobering one. Full Review

This deliciously feisty doc contextualizes their verbal brawls and the odd love-hate (mostly hate) rivalry between two men who seemed able to regard their own sense of heroism only through the other’s villainy. -- Grade: A-

Rating: 4/5 -- There is something about the siren call of the TV camera that can turn even big thinkers into brawlers. It was true then and it's true now, and "Best of Enemies" serves as a thoroughly enjoyable reminder. Full Review

Two patrician New Yorkers with strong political convictions and dryly combative personalities, Buckley and Vidal became go-to TV guests even though -- or perhaps because -- they reveled in asserting their moral and academic superiority when the camera pivoted their way. -- Grade: B+

Rating: B+ -- Did anyone win? Most say Vidal, since Buckley descended to physical threats. But really, has anyone won in any of this endless bickering? Full Review

Product Description:

This documentary, directed by Robert Gordon and Morgan Neville, details the historic 1968 televised debates between staunch conservative William F. Buckley Jr. and the liberal writer, Gore Vidal. Firmly planted in their respective ideologies, the men often fought bitterly in their attempts to discredit each other, nearly coming to blows on more than one occasion. The film delves into their personal histories, mining for clues as to how the contrary political leanings of these two brilliant but complicated men evolved.
