Alcoholic has-been actor Frank Elgin (Bing Crosby) is given one last chance to make a comeback--and save his relationship with his frustrated wife Georgie (Grace Kelly)--when Broadway director Bernie Dodd (William Holden) offers him a starring role in a new musical. Based on the stage play by Clifford Odets, director George Seaton's deeply moving adaptation is driven by the powerful performances of its three leads and garnered seven Academy Award nominations, including a win by Kelly for Best Actress. The film was remade in 1982 with Dick Van Dyke and Faye Dunaway.
