Description by OLDIES.com:
Based on the critically acclaimed novel and award winning film, the series takes an honest look at life in the new South. Bill Gillespie (Carroll O'Connor), a southern white, small-town sheriff and a black detective put their racial animosity aside to solve crimes in a Mississippi hamlet. A tense drama about the navigation through tricky small- town politics where racial tensions run high.
Product Description:
This box set contains every episode from the first season of IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, a drama about a white sheriff and a black detective working together in a racially intolerant southern town. This was the first television program ever adapted from a Best Picture Oscar winner.

Great police drama which takes place in the new South. Everyone plays a good role in this program which is well worth watching. This is still one of my favorite programs.

I remember watching this program.
It continues the story the police department of Sparta Miss. Carrol O'Connor plays the parts of Chief William O. 'Bill' Gillespie & Howard E. Rollins Jr. Chief of Detectives Virgil Tibbs to a "T".
I enjoyed the original movie & the tv show.
But when the show moved from NBC to CBS, it seemed to lose it's punch. So seasons 1 thru 5 are the best of the show. IMHO
