Rating: 3/4 -- Dietrich's fine performance and von Sternberg's visuals (that masquerade ball!) overcome both a shaky second half and a badly miscast Victor McLaglen. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- von Sternberg turns what could have been little more than a typical espionage potboiler into another one of his luxuriant visual essays on Dietrich's smoldering screen presence and his own love of cinematic texture, depth, and tactility. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

One of the most famous and influential star-director collaborations in the history of cinema, Marlene Dietrich and Josef von Sternberg made seven features together which immortalized the actress as a glamorous and enigmatic movie siren while confirming the directors reputation as a supreme stylist of mood, atmosphere and eroticism through his dazzling command of the medium. Inspired by the exploits of the famous World War I spy Mata Hari, DISHONOREDis a striking espionage thriller about a widow (Marlene Dietrich) who is forced to turn to prostitution to support herself. Recruited by the Austrian Secret Service as a spy, she becomes an expert in ferreting out secrets from the enemy but meets her match in the form of a Russian agent named Kranau (Victor McLaglen).
