TOMATOMETER
[I]ts focus on advocacy feels justified given the misconceptions that continue to dominate society’s understanding of the autism community.
A.V. Club
[I]t’s a unique account of autistic spectrum disorder from the inside, giving voice to a community frequently described as 'non-speaking' and dispelling multiple misconceptions about the way they see and feel the world around them.
Variety
The portraits are moving and informative.
New York Times
[A]n empathic study of nonverbal autism that takes us into the world of young neurodivergent people across the world.
The Guardian
Jerry Rothwell interprets and riffs on Higashida’s writing, amplifying the ideas in a way that’s at once impressionistic yet lucid.
Empire
Instead of a literal adaptation, Rothwell's film is a supplement, an echo, a response that enriches the experience of the original work.
Hollywood Reporter
Product Description:
Director Jerry Rothwell adapts the heart of Naoki Higashida's nonfiction book of the same name about living as a "non-speaking" person within the autistic spectrum disorder. The book's structure serves as a jumping-off point of this documentary that follows the lives of children born with the same condition as the author: an artistic Indian girl named Amrit, a British teenager named Joss, American best friends Ben and Emma, and Jestina from Sierra Leone. The film shows their respective lives amidst daily struggles and personal victories.
