TOMATOMETER
A small-scale, satisfying human drama that backs gradually into larger matters, AFTER THE STORM is the latest deceptive miniature from Japan’s Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Boston Globe
3 stars out of 5 -- AFTER THE STORM initially seems plotless, but then the themes come sharply into focus. And the performances are so intense and natural it takes a while to get in sync with the storytelling.
Empire
AFTER THE STORM, a sublimely simple family drama from the Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda, unfolds amid the sweltering heat of an unusually active Pacific typhoon season.
Los Angeles Times
4 stars out of 5 -- Hirokazu Koreeda’s bittersweet comedy about three generations of a Japanese family is a gentle delight. It’s a film that makes eloquent use of the architecture, emotional and physical, of the family home.
The Guardian
Koreeda is deeply fond of his characters, and he never tires of letting them find measures of bliss in small things and compromises.
A.V. Club
[If the] early passages feel uncommonly unmoored for Kore-eda, it’s because he’s at his best in moments of togetherness, an artist who believes in the power of family without advocating for a return to the womb.
Film Comment
3.5 stars out of 4 -- AFTER is as delicately balanced as any film Kore-eda has made, a film that seems to not have much action or momentum but finds cumulative emotional power.
