TOMATOMETER
SHOPLIFTERS follows an improvised clan of Japanese scavengers as, to their own surprise, they become bound by love.
Boston Globe
Writer-director Kore-eda Hirokazu has spent much of the past two decades examining and questioning the bonds that tie families together....SHOPLIFTERS likewise, soon reveals itself as a meditation on family -- specifically, on the makeshift family, assembled by choice rather than by inherited genes.
A.V. Club
4.5 stars out of 5 -- Kore-eda examines the nature of what makes a family and how it stands up to poverty, prosecution and government neglect. It’s impossible to experience the deep-seated compassion of this film and not be moved to tears.
Rolling Stone
At once charming and heart-wrenching, this exquisitely performed film will steal the hearts of both art-house and mainstream audiences.
Variety
This small film is a thoughtful addition to his parables about happy and unhappy families, studded with memorable characters and believable performances that quietly lead the viewer to reflect on societal values.
Hollywood Reporter
Kore-eda works in a beautiful register that feels both detailed and genuine at the same time. We get to know these characters so deeply, watching them all at their jobs.
RogerEbert.com
[T]his wise and insightful film is delicate, poignant and unexpectedly powerful.
Los Angeles Times
