Entertainment Reviews:
It's a severe life in a hostile world, observed with such delicate detail that the film achieves a grace and poetry. But it is also a primal piece of filmmaking, wrought from dirt and rock and calico, illuminated by natural light and campfire.

We Got This Covered
[T]his story is one in which the audience will become so invested in the unvarnished struggle, the hardship... that one can't help but walk away from the theatre with a new sense of understanding and appreciation for America's history.

The Age (Australia)
Certainly, the film is grim in many ways, but there is also great, almost astonishing, beauty. . .

The Tyee (British Columbia)
There are stretches that are, frankly, boring. But the vivid details and intimacy you develop with these travelers sticks with you, leaving you in awe of the insane feats people had to accomplish in order for us to enjoy the world we know today.

I was hypnotized from the opening sequence.

Product Description:
Meek's cutoff; from acclaimed director kelly reichardt (wendy and lucy; old joy); is a stark and poetic drama set in 1845; the earliest days of the treacherous oregon trail. A wagon train of three families (including two-time academy award nominee michelle williams) has hired mountain man stephen meek to guide them over the cascade mountains. Claiming to know a shortcut; meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert; only to become lost in the dry rock and sage. Over the coming days; the emigrants must face the scourges of hunger; thirst; and their own lack of faith in each other's instincts for survival. When a native american wanderer crosses their path; the emigrants are torn between their trust in a guide who has proven himself unreliable and a man who has always been seen as their natural born enemy.
