First love can feel like a swinging pendulum between life and death. It has that kind of gravity. The highs are glorious, the lows are staggeringly painful. Veteran director Francois Ozon taps into this world of discovery and loss in Summer of '85.

Despite some distracting contrivances, "Summer of 85" transports viewers to a place, time and feeling that feel altogether real, and not nearly as far away as they initially might seem.

Sunny, dreamy location shots and intimate performances combine with flashes of humor and a hovering tension in what is a beautifully told, if slightly unoriginal, queer romance that should appeal as much to teens as older generations.

FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles)
One could plausibly argue that the film’s highly variable tones, textures, and characterizations all express its true subject: how each of us view our lives as a narrative and construct fictions of the people we encounter -- especially those we love.

Product Description:
It's the mid-‘80s in Normandy, and 18-year-old French teen David (Benjamin Voisin) rescues 16-year-old Alexis (Félix Lefebvre), whose boat capsizes in a seaside resort. The chance encounter leads to the blossoming of a kindred friendship with a romantic flair between the two teens as they spend more time together during that fateful summer. Alexis is deeply enamored with David until the latter introduces a woman to their camaraderie. Written and directed by François Ozon. Based on the novel by Aidan Chambers.
