First love can feel like a swinging pendulum between life and death. It has that kind of gravity. The highs are glorious, the lows are staggeringly painful. Veteran director Francois Ozon taps into this world of discovery and loss in Summer of '85.

L.A. Weekly
A breezy first-love flashback to more innocent times, Ozon’s latest recalls life not just before COVID-19 but, more importantly, before AIDS overshadowed what it meant to come out...
Variety
It's all predicated on the strength of [Félix Lefebvre and Benjamin Voisin's] performances, and they're really good.

FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles)
In terms of style, SUMMER OF 85 is a throwback to the bold, insouciant spirit of the director’s earliest works.
Hollywood Reporter
Rating: 2.5/4 --
Despite some distracting contrivances, "Summer of 85" transports viewers to a place, time and feeling that feel altogether real, and not nearly as far away as they initially might seem.

Rating: 3/4 --
"Summer of 85" balances intriguingly but a little too murkily on a fulcrum of unreliable narration, and it becomes impossible to tell whether Ozon means us to take the story at face value or undercutting Alex's own melodramatic pronouncements.

Product Description:
It's the mid-‘80s in Normandy, and 18-year-old French teen David (Benjamin Voisin) rescues 16-year-old Alexis (Félix Lefebvre), whose boat capsizes in a seaside resort. The chance encounter leads to the blossoming of a kindred friendship with a romantic flair between the two teens as they spend more time together during that fateful summer. Alexis is deeply enamored with David until the latter introduces a woman to their camaraderie. Written and directed by François Ozon. Based on the novel by Aidan Chambers.
