Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 3/4 --
Miss Pfeiffer is very thin and beautiful; Lea might be at the end of her career, but the actress who plays her certainly is not. She's wonderfully seductive.

Rating: 2.5/4 --
A movie like Cheri needs the time and space of The Age of Innocence. Instead, it's rushed along in an hour and 40 minutes.
Newark Star-Ledger
Rating: 2/4 --
Not erotic enough to be a decent bodice-ripper, funny enough to be a decent comedy, or moving enough to be a decent drama.

From the Front Row
This is a deft, clever adaptation by director Stephen Frears and screenwriter Christopher Hampton of Colette's CHERI novellas, with a commanding star turn by Michelle Pfeiffer...
Film Comment
4 stars out of 5 -- [The film] works with all the joie de vivre and effervescent bubbles of vintage champagne....Hampton's lines, many of which come directly from Colette, are a joy to hear -- barbed and acerbic witticisms that speak volumes...
Box Office
Rating: 2/5 --
Sadly the few good elements of Cheri only serve to highlight the films considerable inadequacies, and the only bedroom-based action it will inspire is a comforting nap, possibly before the end of the film.

Pfeiffer maintains her poise throughout. It's not her performance that limits Chéri, it's the script, which too thin to support the emotional weight it's expected to bear.

Product Description:
Stephen Frears, director of THE QUEEN and HIGH FIDELITY, continues to demonstrate his genre-defying talent with this adaptation of a Colette novel. Set in Paris in the years before World War I, CHERI paints a picture of the romance between young Chéri (Rupert Friend) and retired courtesan Léa (Michelle Pfeiffer). Chéri’s mother (Kathy Bates), a rival of Léa, plots to separate the pair by arranging a marriage between her son and Edmée (Felicity Jones). Screenwriter Christopher Hampton previously collaborated with the director on DANGEROUS LIAISONS.
