Rating: 3.5/5 -- "Judy & Punch" is a promising debut for Foulkes, and it's always nice to see the tables turned on centuries of mistreatment. Full Review

Rating: B- -- "Judy and Punch" feeds on the comic violence that has always informed this material, and finds any number of amusing ways to weaponize it against the irredeemable puppetmaster who's due to become the butt of his own joke. Full Review

Mirrah Foulkes deserves credit for creating this strange stew, and for eliciting tremendous performances from stars Mia Wasikowska and Damon Herriman. Full Review

The movie would like to see itself as a feminist allegory of abuse and systemic oppression, but it comes off as something far more scattered and unfocused. Full Review

Product Description:

This black comedy-drama film is the directorial debut of actor-scriptwriter Mirrah Foulkes which reimagines a possible origin story for the traveling puppet show known as the Punch and Judy act. Mia Wasikowska plays Judy while Damon Herriman plays Punch, two married puppeteers based in Seaside, England. Punch's uncontrollable drinking problem results in the accidental death of their baby and an assault on Judy, who was left for dead. Punch puts on a show for their town to pretend that witches killed his wife and baby. But Judy is very much alive and now seeks revenge against Punch.
