Product Description:

Predating the Stonewall milestone in Gay Rights, this documentary goes behind the scenes to witness the catty and campy competition of the mascaraed and sequined male contestants in the "Miss All-America Camp Beauty Pageant" of 1967. Celebrity judges include Edie Sedgwick, George Plimpton, Terry Southern and Andy Warhol.

Plot Synopsis:

"The Queen" is the forerunner of movies such as "Paris is Burning," which cover the drag world, drag queens and drag contests. Filmed during the 1967 Miss All-American Camp Beauty Pageant in New York City, the film takes a fun look at a serious competition among drag queens from all over the country -- most of whom took more than a fair share of inspiration from Hollywood's female icons.

Production Notes:

  • Rated BBFC E by the British Board of Film Classification.
  • Available to rent in the UK.
  • Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick (Miss Youthquake herself) appear as two judges of the competition.
  • A Si Litvinoff-Vineyard Films-MDH Production of an Evergreen Film distributed by Grove Press.
