Post-bop mainstay Cedar Walton has tickled the ivories with everyone from Art Blakey to Clifford Jordan, but his solo discography is not to be overlooked. SEASONED WOOD, cut when Walton was nearing his mid-70s, is as vital and refined as anything he's done in his career. Backed by an exceptional quintet, including drummer Al Foster and longtime cohort saxophonist Vincent Herring, Walton swings fiercely on standards ("The Man I Love," "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square") and on his own excellent originals. Sophisticated and elegant, Walton updates his classic post-bop sound, not by forcing it into something it's not, but by bringing it to life with the wisdom and panache of a veteran.
