Entertainment Reviews:
Lots of grads bring their wives back to the old school and ham it up for home movies -- but this is ridiculous.

If it wasn't so dull it would camp but it doesn't even achieve that.

The mixture of posed speeches, arty apparitions and some willfully unfocused camerawork, suggests some kind of timeslip, as though the film had been deep-frozen twenty years ago.

Weighed down with tedium and old-fashioned dialogue (using the verse's 'Old English' language) that worked on the written page but is misplaced on the screen.

The overall effect is like a cross between a garishly colored Hammer horror film and a textbook example of '60s hallucinogenic trendiness.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Of the many films they made together, nowhere is the seductive power of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor better showcased than in this adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's classic play, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. First dramatized in the 16th century, the legend of Doctor Faustus is the immortal tale of a German conjurer who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a life of adventure and excitement. It has proved to be one of the richest legends of our time, inspiring countless plays and motion pictures. In this classic version, Burton stars as the aging scholar who makes a deal with the devil for youth, knowledge and a dazzling mistress. But when Faustus begins to regret his decision, the devil's assistant, Mephistophilis, sends Taylor as the spellbinding seductress who seals Faustus's fate.
