Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 4/5 --
An intriguing movie about how badly we really want to know the unknowable, what makes kids kill other kids.
Orlando Sentinel
Rating: 3/5 --
Hoge seems to take delight in the fact that the film's conclusion is so frustratingly vague, whereas in fact it's both annoying and disappointing.

Rating: 1/4 --
Besides being puffed up with its importance, it's also inert and totally implausible -- one of those movies where nobody behaves in a way that seems remotely human.

San Francisco Chronicle
Rating: 3/5 --
First time writer/director Matthew Ryan Hoge's multi-layered ensemble drama is both deeply ambitious and a total mess.

Rating: 1.5/4 --
It's neither an insightful nor well-made film.

Isn't it sad that a boy like this could feel so lost that he had to kill someone? Well, maybe. But isn't it sadder that someone's dead?
Newark Star-Ledger
Rating: C+ --
A sidetracking subplot about Madison's adulterous fling with a co-worker goes nowhere; it is one of several unsatisfying, tertiary plot strands.

Description by OLDIES.com:
After seemingly ordinary 15-year-old Leland (Ryan Gosling) stuns his quiet suburban community with a chilling crime, he is sent to juvenile hall where he meets Pearl (Don Cheadle), a teacher and aspiring writer who dreams of making Leland's compelling story into a book. As Pearl digs deeper into Leland's life and the people caught up in it -- his mother (Lena Olin), his famous writer-father (Kevin Spacey), and his troubled girlfriend (Jena Malone) -- he uncovers Leland's disturbing motive. The tables soon turn when the enigmatic teen forces Pearl to examine his own morally questionable behavior.
