Wall Street Journal
4 stars out of 5 -- [T]he performances are intense, uplifting and beautifully shot.
[An] extravagantly entertaining documentary, assembled by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte from a trove of hundreds of hours of footage captured by some of the world's finest cinéma vérité camera operators...
New York Times
[V]ibrant and joyous....Excellent cameramen, often right on stage, captured the sheer joy of performance in a way that has rarely been so beautifully done.
Los Angeles Times
4 stars out of 5 -- Jeffrey Levy-Hinte's documentary is uproarious and uplifting....A worthy companion piece to WHEN WE WERE KINGS...
[T]he lively documentary SOUL POWER manages to find a fresh new angle on an event that's become such a nostalgic landmark in popular culture...
SOUL POWER combines electrifying performances from King, Brown, and The Spinners with behind-the-scenes footage of the performers in Zaire and the always-magnetic Muhammad Ali goofing around.
What's infectious in SOUL POWER is the almost shocking optimism of its America-meets-Africa '70s world-beat vibe. -- Grade: B
Though the eyes of the world were on "The Rumble in the Jungle" in 1974, their ears should have been on Zaire '74, the mammoth music festival that took place in the shadow of the battle between Mohammad Ali and George Foreman. This documentary takes the stellar cut footage from WHEN WE WERE KINGS and chronicles the concerts from big names such as James Brown, B.B. King, Bill Withers, and Celia Cruz. Though Zaire '74 might have been overlooked in favor of the legendary fight, SOUL POWER still packs a serious punch for music fans.
