Description by OLDIES.com:
Unbeknownst to its humble citizens, the gang of outlaws robbing the Wild West town of Pine Bluffs blind is led by their secretly corrupt Mayor Hill. Once the town bank is completely depleted of cash, bank president John Martin heads into the city to borrow $50,000 so the people of Pine Bluffs have something to live on. While returning with the funds, Martin is ambushed by the Mayor's men who take off with the money. Since it appears that Martin stole the cash himself, a lynch mob forms in Pine Bluffs looking to bring him to justice - dead or alive. Fortunately, Billy the Kid and his old pal, Fuzzy Q. Jones, come to Martin's rescue before the townspeople can make a fatal mistake. Sussing out the Mayor's hand in all this, the trio of renegades vow to expose the corruption in Pine Bluffs and smash the crooks once and for all.
PRC started producing their "Billy the Kid" series in 1940, which reinvented the famous outlaw as a hero. Bob Steele played Billy in the first six features, and was replaced by former "Flash Gordon" Buster Crabbe in 1941. After thirteen movies, Billy's surname was changed to Carson, suggesting that PRC got cold feet about the negative historical association. Overall, Buster and his bearded sidekick Al "Fuzzy" St. John would make three dozen "Billy the Kid" movies for the studio in five years! Incredibly, tireless B-movie filmmaker Sam Newfield directed all 42 entries in the series (sometimes under a pseudonym) leading him to be dubbed "America's most prolific sound film director" by critic/historian Wheeler Winston Dixon. As for this particular entry, even though the film's title card clearly reads The Renegades, all sources show that the film was promoted and released simply as The Renegade.
