Rating: 3/5 --
With its solid performances, Asante's direction and Hibbert's screenplay, A United Kingdom is a beautifully told love story but its melodramatic tones simplify what was a historically complex relationship.

Asante's film successfully balances the personal and the political...to create a very moving insight into an almost overlooked but crucial chapter that defined the recent history of two countries.

Dog and Wolf
This story is great filmmaking, and director Asante makes the end result look and feel effortless. Her eye for detail elevates every frame, and her gentle way with actors leaves them room to do what they do best.

[I]t’s an important historical lesson...
Variety
[I]t is a remarkable tale not only because it's a true story, but one where a romance influenced the outcome of British and African history.
Hollywood Reporter
Product Description:
Dramatization of the real-life romance between white Londoner Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) and African law student Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), who began their love affair in 1947 when Williams was unaware that Khama was the heir apparent to the throne of the Bamangwato tribe of the British protectorate of Bechuanaland (modern-day Botswana). After deciding to marry, the couple return to Africa so he can assume his royal duties, but their interracial marriage faces opposition from both Khama's family and neighboring South Africa, whose apartheid government leans on Britain to break up their union.
