It then turned out that My Man Godfrey was really about the class-struggle, not the best subject in the world for comedy. Best not to stay for the ending. It leaves you with the feeling that the whole thing was a waste of time. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- There's a charm to both Powell and Lombard, making the film transcend generations. It's a cute movie that has fun with levels of wealth in society and sibling rivalry. Full Review

My Man Godfrey emerges with that evasive quality that is not skillful playing, writing or direction, but something that mysteriously adds itself to these things, and makes a tip-top picture. Full Review

Gregory La Cava's warm and giddy carousel, a raucous burlesque with a beautiful still center, a lighter and tarter savior fable than Capra's concurrent transmutations of the Gospels Full Review

Product Description:

Based on the novel by Eric Hatch, this screwball comedy is a genre favorite. On a scavenger hunt for a society ball, haughty Cornelia Bullock discovers Godfrey, a dirty, dishevelled bum lurking around the city dump. She's looking for a "forgotten man" and Godfrey fits the bill perfectly. Hoping to win her first prize, she offers him five dollars to come along with her. Proud and dignified, he refuses, casting her aside. Minutes later, when her lovely younger sister Irene makes the same request, an enamored Godfrey accepts. The hunt sets off an unusual chain of events that bring Godfrey into the Bullock household as a permanent fixture. He'll become deeply embroiled in their family saga before anyone learns his true identity. Re-made in 1957.
