Entertainment Reviews:
While it's hardly subtle, it is compelling.

An insightful document that recognized the strains, pitfalls and hypocrisies of the sexual revolution even as it was beginning.

Pietrangeli shot the film in gorgeous monochrome, but it’s the way that he resists making anything else black and white -- at least until the last few seconds --that makes it such a quiet stunner.

Rating: 3/4 --
Antonio Pietrangeli's structuring logic proceeds from a philosophical, rather than character-based, foundation, causing a chill to pervade the entire film.

This is a timeless story, although not in [director Antonio] Pietrangeli's hands, an archetypal one.

I KNEW HER WELL chronicles the life of the would-be starlet Adriana as she sometimes blithely, sometimes sadly negotiates a rise from peasant life to Rome’s not entirely dolce vita.
New York Times
Product Description:
Adriana (Stefania Sandrelli) is a young woman from the country who gets caught up in the tempestuous temptations of the big city in this somber moral drama. She has a series of affairs that are just for fun, but she becomes depressed when she desperately looks for a more meaningful relationship. The only men she finds sympathy with are a battered boxer (Mario Adorf) and a publicity agent (Nino Manfredi). Ugo Tognazzi has a brief part as a washed-up actor. Adriana's dreams are crushed to the point that she considers suicide her only alternative.
