Product Description:
Originally a high-end classical records label, Period Records released an eclectic selection of jazz and blues titles between 1954 and 1958. Most of the selections compiled for this collection were recorded during those years with the exception of the Django Reinhardt sides which were recorded in the late 1940's. Period's Jazz Digest LPs were various artist compilations released in two volumes in the late 1950's. They offered a broad cross section of styles, incorporating swing, modern jazz, avant-garde and acoustic blues. Artists as diverse as Big Bill Broonzy and Charles Mingus coexisted on the same vinyl platter, resulting in an adventurous listening experience. This concept worked well and the LPs were critically lauded for this innovation. Vol. 1, presented here, features rare and classic tracks from Charles Mingus, Josh White, Django Reinhardt, Maxine Sullivan, Al Haig, Big Bill Broonzy, Ralph Burns, Osie Johnson and more. All selections newly remastered.
