Except for brief injections of camp administered by John Waters' vet Mink Stole ... and Dom DeLuise, there's little in Girl Play that doesn't evaporate by closing credits.

Greenspan and Harmon's paltry song of themselves concludes with five minutes of outtakes, capping the self-love.

Rating: 2.5/5 -- Mainly a simple pair of soliloquies about lesbians struggling as life partners, with some scenes of farce and dread in the mix.

Rating: 3/5 -- Too many musical montages break the momentum, but overall it's an engaging piece of work, regardless of which team you play for. Full Review

Rating: 1.5/4 -- With little plot and a stifling set, the movie needs stronger performances than its leads can offer.

Product Description:

The successful stage play REAL GIRLS, created and performed by real-life lovers Robin Greenspan and Lacie Harmon, is here adapted for the silver screen by Lee Friedlander (WASABI TUNA). Greenspan and Harmon play themselves--stand-up comics who have known each other for some time but never shared an attraction. Robin is in a committed relationship of six years, while Lacie is committed to nothing except her freedom. All this changes when the women are cast in a lesbian play, whose director, Gabriel, (Dom Delouise in a camp-fueled turn), encourages them to develop their intimacy to achieve greater depth of character in their performances. But the more time the women spend together, the more sparks fly, leading each to question their own perceptions of themselves. Meanwhile, Lacie struggles to come out to her mother, an overbearing matchmaker (Joh Waters staple Mink Stole), and Robin must deal with the jealousy of her control-freak lover. Funny and poignant, this retelling of the true story of how its stars met and fell in love is as heartwarming as it is important, filling a gap in lesbian films while addressing the larger questions of modern love.

Description by Wolfe Video:

"Vivacious, sexy, clever!" - Curve Magazine. When Gabriel (Dom Deluise) casts "real" lesbians in a play about two actors falling in love, he unintentionally sparks a raging passion between the women. As rehearsals progress, the action behind the scenes takes off in ways both comic and sexy. Also stars Mink Stole as a hilariously distraught mother. 80 min. [CC]
