Description by OLDIES.com:

I came off another long tour with Sting in '94 and for the first time in my career I felt like I had the freedom and reason to say something. I was in a good zone and wanted to make an album. I wrote the tunes in the spring of '95 and then there were two ways to go. One was to call on my famous friends and make a fully produced star studded album. The other was to stay home with my young family and do something more intimate. I chose the latter. The downside was no label would sign me and the upside was I wasn't answerable to anyone but myself. I thank Judy for supporting me 100% throughout the writing and recording process of First Touch. I wrote and recorded it inside a family atmosphere with the noises and distractions that went with it. I was often interrupted by the kids but I didn't mind because it became clear to me that this was partly what it was all about. Other than the family, my only companion was a large oak tree outside the window. I didn't have a title for the album but went ahead anyway with the artwork. I was recommended Russian photographer Sasha Gusov who was known for his work in opera and ballet. He took a few cool or moody shots of me but I was immediately taken by the picture of my fingers on the guitar with Misty's index finger touching my hand. I knew then and there that that was the cover and the title came to me instantaneously. It was obvious. First Touch. 'Carnaval' was written and recorded at Pino Palladino's place while I was writing the album. 'Luberon' and 'Urban Waltz' we're recently custom written to be a part of this project with the idea of fitting in. There are three musicians I was working with around this time I feel I must acknowledge. One is Mark Hollis who inspired me with his unconventional way with melody, arrangement and intense detail. The other is Karl Wallinger of World Party (a band I was in in '86 and '87). I've always been fascinated by his production values. His records always sound homemade yet are very accessible. And Sting who was, and still is my mentor. His lateral sense of harmony, songwriting form and all round work ethic has always influenced me. I look up to Mark, Karl and Sting for these reasons. Unbeknownst to them they form part of the DNA in First Touch. People often tell me this is their favourite of my albums. I feel an strong bond with all those who have identified with this music because by doing so you are connecting with the curiosity, optimism, and peace I felt at the time. Thank you for sharing the journey with me. Dom
