FRONTLINE presents a two-hour exploration of the sources of John Paul II's character and beliefs, divided into six sections: "Landscape" examines the culture and history of his native Poland; "Jews" looks at his direct experience during the Holocaust, watching as Jewish friends were swept into concentration camps; "Solidarity" involves his vigorous anti-Communist stance as pope, marshalling the wealth and clout of the Catholic Church against the Soviet Union; "Women" analyzes his veneration of the Virgin Mary and his tendency to judge all women by her example; "Culture of Death" documents his attitudes toward contraception, abortion, and the death penalty; and "Faith" deals with his single-minded spirituality.
