Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 2/5 --
Cartoonish and clichéd.

Times (UK)
Rating: 4/5 --
It may be archly made by first-time feature director Trudie Styler (aka Mrs Sting), but it's also beautifully anchored in another richly detailed, deeply committed performance from Alex Lawther.

Gay Essential
It has all the nuance of a sharpie-scrawled slur on a locker. It's pacing is atrocious with scenes colliding together like drunken brunchers, without grace or intention.

Billy’s story still has power and could still be a comfort to those fighting their own battles against bullying, and there’s real inspiration in his refusal to be anyone other than who he is.

Rating: 3/5 --
It's good natured and well intentioned, but you end up wishing that Styler's directorial decisions were even half as bold as Billy's wardrobe.

"Freak Show" is a hot mess with good intentions.

A drama so forced, all good intentions are forgotten by the umpteenth cliché, about six minutes in.

Product Description:
A flamboyant, cross-dressing teenager (Alex Lawther) is forced to live with his uptight father (Larry Pine) and attend a rigidly traditional high school. He endures taunts and bullying from his peers, and eventually decides to run for homecoming queen against a snobby popular girl (Abigail Breslin). Trudie Styler directed this coming-of-age story, which is adapted from a novel by James St. James. Bette Midler and Laverne Cox co-star.
