Vocalist Paul Heaton and drummer Dave Hemmingway, fresh from their stint as one-half of the Housemartins, hooked up with guitarist David Rotheray and other mates and formed The Beautiful South in 1989. Over the next 18 years, the band was more successful than any of them could have imagined.
