Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 2.5/5 --
It has inventive ideas in the setup of her fishy tale. But the story doesn't do enough with them, and, for a large stretch, flops along like a landlocked fish gasping for air.

The Dissolve
Rating: 2.5/5 --
Too much of this film feels like a half-baked Saturday Night Live skit stretched to the fraying point.
Film Threat
Rating: 6/10 --
The Boy Who Smells Like Fish is an amusing slant on the coming-of-age film that hits occasional false moments but never wears out its welcome.

We Got This Covered
A gentle charmer punctuated with a series of nicely judged performance and an increasing sense of magical realism.

Screen International
Emitting the unpleasant stench of over-affectation, "Treading Water" slaps together its particular peculiarities with such randomness, it's as if the film were conceived from blindly throwing disparate elements at the wall.

Well-acted with a compelling concept, but shallow and less than the sum of its parts.

NYC Movie Guru
A freshly conceived combo coming of age unorthodox romance, channeling amphibious desires and counting as well the release of an inner mermaid at the local swimming pool. In a story whose whimsically if far fetched flights of fancy somehow stay afloat.

Description by OLDIES.com:
A sensitive boy is forced to face life with a rare condition that leaves him smelling like a fish. With his strange ailment, Mica (Douglas Smith) sadly grows to accept that he may never find happiness until, as a young boy, he meets Laura (Zoë Kravitz) who seems to not notice Mica's unique odor and wants to be his friend. Raised by his eccentric mother Sophie (Ariadna Gil) and his unstable father Richard (Don McKellar) who eventually abandons the family, Mica grows up in a house that's an over-the-top gaudy museum celebrating the renowned Mexican crooner Guillermo Garibai (Gonzalo Vega). Even as Mica's therapist Catherine (Carrie-Anne Moss) gently guides him through his daily troubles it becomes more and more obvious that only his childhood crush Laura can actually cure what ails him.
