In the leading roles, Portman does a conscientious job with a difficult role, Sweet creates charm without over-sentimentalising and Price is brisk and efficient. Full Review

Rating: 2/4 -- A mighty strange movie, one that updates Chaucer's story to wartime Britain. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- This far-sighted film, which was dismissed at the time, is lyrical in its celebration of a disappearing England. Full Review

It's oddly soothing and exciting to just bask in the film's images and listen to its stories and ideas. Full Review

Sincerity and simplicity shine through every foot of this oversized modern version of the Chaucer epic tale. Here is rare beauty. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- Curious allegorical epic which was supposed to speak to Allied spirits during the second world war but was a trifle obscure in its symbolism even then. Full Review

Very nearly plotless, this 1944 film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger represents one of the few times the narrative cinema has approached the lyrical ideal. Full Review

Beautiful film with memorable characters Movie Lover: from DECATUR, GA US -- March, 15, 2008

Another masterpiece from Powell and Pressburger, this film accomplishes what is most difficult -- characters we care about in the first two minutes. The World War II drama played out in a small village sets the stage for the final scenes in Canterbury, with moving surprises and a fitting ending. The southern England scenery is breathtaking, sharply contrasted against a backdrop of total war. I recommend this wonderful film to anyone looking for strong character development, humor, and beautiful filmwork.
