Product Description:

A quartet of classic science-fiction films featuring some of Hollywood's first great examples of special effects are included in this collection. The films include: SON OF KONG (1933) and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949) (each directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack and featuring effects from the team that created 1933's King Kong), the cinematic adaptation of Ray Bradbury's THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (1953, directed by Eugene Lourie) and the Gordon Douglas-directed THEM! (1954), which received an Academy Award nomination for its use of special effects.

Son of Kong-This movie was rushed out in 1933 to take advantage of the great success of King Kong. While it is bereft of the most spectacular scenes of its predecessor, the special effects (mostly stop motion animation) are first rate for 1933. Carl Denham and Captain Engelhorn return to Skull Island hoping to find a treasure. When their crew mutinies five people are stranded on the island. They are assisted in their struggle for survival by the adolescent Son of Kong who becomes their loving pet.
Mighty Joe Young (1949)-Max O’Hara talks young African plantation owner Jill Young into coming to Hollywood with her giant gorilla pet Joe Young to serve as the main act in his soon-to-be opened nightclub. When Joe is given alcohol by some inebriated customers, he goes crazy and causes great property damage and injuries. Joe is condemned to be terminated: however, Max devises a plan for Joe to escape and return to Africa.
Willis O’Brien, head of special effects for King Kong and Son of Kong, was again entrusted with special effects. He was ably assisted by Ray Harryhausen who was to become a legend in stop motion animation.
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)-The United States explodes an A-bomb in northern Canada, releasing a huge dinosaur from the ice in which it was entombed. The monster heads for its spawning grounds near New York City. This was the first of many movies of the ’50s and ’60s with basically the same plot including Godzilla, The Giant Behemoth, and Reptilicus. In his first role as head of special effects, Ray Harryhausen created big-budget results on a B-movie budget.
Them! (1954)-In a suspenseful movie, genetic mutation caused by the first atomic explosion creates ants the size of ponies. This was the first and best of the big-bug movies of the ’50s. James Arness stars in this movie just before his 21-year run in Gunsmoke. And an interested viewer, Walt Disney, was so impressed by Fess Parker’s small part that Disney signed Parker for the Davey Crockett miniseries.
These films all looked better in Blu-ray than they did in DVD.
