Rating: 1.5/4 -- Its original title was Bread, which would account for the film's obsession with wheat. The story takes a long time to unfold. Full Review

Some of Murnau's genius remains in the lighting of individual shots, and particularly in a lyrical sequence in which a man (Charles Farrell), a woman (Mary Duncan), and Murnau's camera dance through a sunlit field. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- A solid, emotionally charged picture that bridges a gap between German expressionism and poetic realism.

City Girl - The Silent Masterpiece! Movie Lover: from BRONX, NY US -- September, 7, 2015

Have you heard of the expression "to make a grown man cry?" Well, I did, watching this moving film from 1929 directed by the great F.W. Murnau! Everything about this film is perfect- the production, direction and of course, the acting! I won't tell you the plot of the film but what I will say is this after viewing it- you will never forget it! "City Girl" was released in silent and sound versions though I preferred the silent version because of the pathos mood of the film! The most striking aspect of the film is the acting of Mary Duncan! She is a knockout and is the heart of the film! Anyway, if you are having a bad day and need to watch an uplifting movie - "City Girl" ranks up with the best of them!
