Formed in 1977 by Edgardo Diaz who had earlier managed La Pandilla, this Puerto Rican boy band originally comprised brothers Carlos Meléndez (1965, Puerto Rico), Oscar Meléndez (b. 1966, Puerto Rico) and Ricky Meléndez (b. 1967, Puerto Rico), who were cousins of Diaz, and brothers Nefty Sallaberry (b. Oscar Neftalí Sallaberry, 1 March 1964, Ponce, Puerto Rico) and Fernando Sallaberry (b. 24 December 1965, Barcelona, Spain). The group was initially regulated by an age limit of 16, Puerto Rican nationality, a height limit and, if a singer’s voice broke out he went. The word ‘menudo/a’ translates as tiny, thus ‘la gente menuda’ (the little people).
