Sterling Magee (20 May 1936, Mount Olive, Mississippi, USA) and Adam Gussow (b. 3 April 1958, Congers, New York, USA). Magee almost had a career in the 60s when, managed by Al Sears and Jesse Stone, he made one single for Sylvia Records, ‘Get In My Arms Little Girlie’, and a pair for Ray Charles’ Tangerine label, ‘Oh She Was Pretty’ and ‘I Still Believe In You’. By the mid-80s he had become a one-man band on 125th Street in Harlem, playing guitar, two hi-hats, tambourines and a sounding board. In October 1986, Gussow, a 1979 Princeton graduate who had busked in Paris and Amsterdam, happened by and asked to play. Since then, the pair have toured Europe on several occasions and appeared in U2’s concert film Rattle And Hum. Their first album was nominated for a W.C. Handy award, but its sequel added nothing to the impression made by Harlem Blues. Their dynamic blend of funk, blues and R&B intrigues the ear on first listening...
