Has an easy sentimentality that becomes grating, playing heavily on conventional devices, suffering from lack of risk-taking and an irrelevant poetic refrain that, to be charitable, doesn't translate that well to English. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Zarhin's episodic, unpredictable film is life-affirming.

Rating: C+ -- The moral is muddled, never quite knowing which way to turn, and that hurts this otherwise sweet family tale. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Zarhin has a fine ear for dialogue with refreshing directness and loud rings of truth, but he also knows when to let looks speak volumes.
Houston Chronicle

Rating: 2.5/4 -- What it's really about is a subject anyone who has ever been an adolescent can relate to: the period when you start to take responsibility for what kind of person you are and what kind of life you're going to have.

Rating: B -- Though its destination is entirely predictable, the warm-hearted picture proves a quite pleasant vehicle for getting there. Full Review

Rating: B -- A warm exception to coming-of-age stories that accent the tacky and vulgar aspects of adolescent awakening. Full Review

Product Description:

A coming-of-age teen comedy, the Israeli BONJOUR MONSIEUR SHLOMI eschews scatological humor for a warm, melodramatic humanism. Shlomi is a young man who has become the linchpin of his dysfunctional family--he does the cooking, he cares for grandfather, he mediates between feuding parents. He spends so much time caring for others that he is unable to look after his own schooling and personal life. But when he simultaneously falls in love and is declared a genius by the school principal, Shlomi must find a delicate balance between serving himself best without abandoning his needy family. BONJOUR MONSIEUR SHLOMI was nominated for 12 Israeli Academy Awards.
