Chris Barber Merrydown Blues: From Archives

The famous English jazz trombonist and bandleader Chris Barber helped to create the careers of many diverse musicians including vocalist and banjo player Lonnie Donegan who rose to fame during the skiffle music craze of the mid 1950 s. In the late 50's and early 60's Barber was instrumental in arranging the first UK tours of American blues artists, thus sparking the interest of young local musicians such as Peter Green, Eric Clapton and the members of the the Rolling Stones in the blues, ultimately causing the British blues explosion of the early 1960's. Presented here are some of Barber's most famous early recordings from 1954 and 1955 - featuring Lonnie Donnegan on three tracks including his famous skiffle hit, "Rock Island Line."
