An engrossing romantic drama that tells a good story with fine performances and an overall honesty of dramatic purpose.

What is to be said of such a picture? The story is trite. The motivations are thin. The writing is glossy and pedestrian. The acting is pretty much forced.

Somewhat engrossing but too much a dull and heavy-handed tragic melodrama.

Technicolor Parisian travelogue, MGM-style, that barely skims the Fitzgerald source material.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's tragic love story was brought to the screen with surprising vitality under Brooks' expert hand.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Loosely based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Babylon Revisited", The Last Time I Saw Paris tells the story of American Charles Wills (Van Johnson) who returns to Paris and reminisces about his life there after its liberation following WWII. It was then he met Marion (Donna Reid) and also Helen (Elizabeth Taylor), whom he married. Following a tragedy, Charles left Paris but now back, does not know what the future may hold. Director Richard Brooks went on to direct Elizabeth Taylor in the multi-Oscar winning Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1959), for which she won Best Actress. The Last Time I Saw Paris is a beautiful, timeless, romantic drama for the ages.
