Here's another strong addition to SPG's Old School Jams series. Twenty-six tracks (spread across a pair of discs), almost all of which were staples on urban radio throughout the late '70s and early '80s. Without exception, each pick has aged well, often thanks in part to rap producers who have used them for sample fodder. Disco (The Emotions' "Best of My Love," the Jacksons' "Blame It on the Boogie"), funk (Funkadelic's "[Not Just] Knee Deep"), electro (Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock," Hashim's "Al Naafiysh [The Soul]"), and synthesized '80s R&B (Cameo's "Candy," Sylvia Striplin's "Give Me Your Love") are represented well. Several cuts are included in their extended (and often superior) mixes, making the compilation all the more appealing. ~ Andy Kellman
