Plainly regressive...But it's also a dark tale of consuming jealousy...[and] it's got classy, subversively feminist comic relief.

There is a pictorial quality about the opening scenes, and a maturity in the dialogue which make a better part of the picture seem true and important.

Description by OLDIES.com:
When Walter Bernsdorf (Paul Lukas) kills his wife (Gloria Stuart) for having an affair, lawyer Paul Held (Frank Morgan) takes on the case. Suggesting that Walter could be acquitted by means of temporary insanity, Paul not only realizes that this defense may work but that also some of the behavioral patterns Walter's wife showed in regard to her infidelity also are appearing in his own wife, Maria (Nancy Carroll). Paul realizes that if this defense could work once, it might work a second time.
