Rating: 3/5 -- As good-natured as its big, beefy star, comedian Sinbad. Full Review
Los Angeles Times
Turns out to be an inane fish-out-of-water comedy. Along the way it turns into a virtual McDonald's commercial, too. The fact that you can hardly tell the difference is a good clue to the movie's bad-television flavor.
New York Times
Rating: 2/5 -- Tedious and unfocused...the contrivance in this forgettable comedy is inexplicably unbearable
Rating: 2/5 -- Waste of Phil Hartman and Sinbad
Rating: 1/5 -- here's that eviction notice
Rating: 1.5/4 -- Plot-wise, there's little here beyond a few insubstantial strands. Full Review
...Good-natured....HOUSEGUEST manages some deft social satire....HOUSEGUEST is tailored to show off the engaging Sinbad, a man of much wit and presence...
Los Angeles Times
A charming ghetto guy on the run from loan sharks poses as a long-lost friend of a suburban lawyer in this wacky comic romp. After scamming his way into the house, he turns the WASP family upside down, and teaches them how to have fun again.
Description by Buena Vista Home Entertainment.:
Get ready for riotous laughs as funnymen Sinbad (THE SINBAD SHOW) and Phil Hartman (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, NEWSRADIO) team up in this outrageous comedy hit! Sinbad is Kevin Franklin, a get-rich-quick con man who escapes the mob by impersonating the long-lost friend of an uptight businessman (Hartman) -- and moving in with his family! Soon this wily con artist is struggling to find out who he's pretending to be ... a wine expert, a golfer, or even a dentist! But when the family starts to see through his act, and the mob catches on to his scam, Kevin finds his escapade as a "houseguest" is suddenly much more than he bargained for!
Two thugs chase Kevin Franklin -- who owes an astronomical sum of money to a loan shark -- through a Pittsburgh airport. Luckily, Kevin runs into Gary Young who's awaiting the arrival of a summer camp friend who he hasn't seen in 25 years. Kevin immediately assumes the identity of Gary's childhood friend and must use quick double-talk to convince Gary and his family that he truly remembers their beautifully shared past. Soon, the Young family becomes deeply attached to their new houseguest... that is, until the thugs make a surprise visit and reveal that it's all been a ruse.
