Product Description:

Recording information: 02/27/1934-07/??/1950.
Art Tatum was undoubtedly the greatest jazz pianist for most of his career, and few have approached his genius at the keyboard. This unusual LP of solo piano complies airchecks from a 1934 Cleveland broadcast as well as two tracks from a 1950 Cafe Society broadcast. Unfortunately, the transcription discs that served as source material for these selections were rather worn so there is rather audible surface noise on all of these songs, though Tatum's romp through "Taboo" and the medley of Gershwin songs (labeled incorrectly as just "The Man I Love") make it worth owning this long unavailable album. Side two consists of nine frequently reissued tracks recorded for Standard Transcriptions in the mid-'40s, all of which have since appeared on CD with far better sound, so collectors will have little difficulty locating this material. Not an essential release for most jazz piano fans, but the two rare tracks from Cafe Society will have Tatum fanatics searching high and low for this LP. ~ Ken Dryden
