Way Too Indie
Rating: 3.5/4 -- This is well-trod ground for Petzold, but never has it been so fully realized, so palpable, as in "Barbara." Full Review
Nina Hoss as the title character Barbara gives a sterling, complex performance, convincingly combining wary guardedness with steely determination. Full Review

Christian Petzold's script is finely attuned to the atmosphere of suspicion and subterfuge that pervades surveillance states...
Sight and Sound
The occasional ravings of the patients, ringing off the walls in Petzold's measured quiet, provide an appropriate backdrop to the heroine's need for freedom, yet the movie's politics never trump its humanity. Full Review
[The director's] early love of Hitchcock, for one, is evident in the prickles of unease that creep into his work, creating a cold climate of paranoia and an oft-justified fear of an imminent threat.
New York Times
Rating: 4.5/5 -- Hoss is fantastic. Barbara is ice cold at the start, understandably so. Yet Hoss makes her sympathetic. Full Review
A German doctor is banished to a remote hospital in East Germany in this drama set at the dawn of the 1980s. At odds with her new surroundings, frustrated doctor Barbara (Nina Hoss) finds comfort only in her secret rendezvous' with her West German paramour Jörg (Mark Waschke). Jörg is currently in the midst of formulating an escape plan for Barbara, and in the meantime the exiled doctor begins working in tandem with chief physician Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld). Despite Andre's outward kindness to her, Barbara resists his overtures. When a pregnant patient named Stella (Jasna Fritzi Bauer) arrives in the hospital infected with meningitis, however, Barbara and Andre begin working closely together to save the life of the young woman and her unborn child. Over time, the barriers between Andre and Barbara begin to fall. But when the time comes for Barbara to flee across the border, it remains uncertain which course of action she will take.
