3 stars out of 4 -- Hayao Miyazaki's THE WIND RISES has a wistful quality that is at once contemplative and nostalgic...

Rating: 4/5 -- Miyazaki's swansong is every bit as masterful as Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, tempered only by a bittersweet sadness which runs throughout. Full Review

This is dense material to grapple with, but Miyazaki’s light-as-air animation rises to the task.

I don't doubt the sincerity of Miyazaki's pacifism but I'm appalled by his abstract vision. Like, how many tens or hundreds of thousands of real people in Asia and the Pacific were de-animated thanks to [Jiro] Horikoshi's dreams? Full Review

In Jiro's dreams, the sky is filled with airplanes, swooping and colorful, like big fanciful paper birds, or benevolent bright dragons, harmless and buoyant.

Rating: 4/4 -- Miyazaki is a master, and The Wind Rises is a tender, loving farewell to a truly glorious career. Full Review

Product Description:

An aviation-obsessed engineer named Jirô Horikoshi (Hideaki Anno) has loved the aesthetics, spirit, and science of flight for as long as he can remember. For years he's been designing and building his dream plane, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, and it's finally completed. But Jiro's dreams come crashing down when he learns, to his horror, that his creation will be used for combat in World War II.
