It's significant that Coleman tells Clarke's cameras that he thought of being an architect or 'brain specialist' before becoming a musician; as a jazz composer, instrumentalist and bandleader, he achieved all his goals.

Coleman's life and work are treated as a continuum, which Clarke pulls from at will.

Product Description:
This feature-length documentary is devoted to the life and art of famed jazz musician Ornette Coleman. Saxophonist, trumpeter, violinist--you name the musical instrument, and supreme stylist Coleman will make magic with it. At the time this film was made, Coleman had not turned out an album in years, though he was still active on the concert circuit. Filmmaker Shirley Clarke focuses on Coleman's appearance with the symphony orchestra in his home town of Fort Worth, Texas. Also featured are extensive interview sequences, and clips from such earlier short subjects as Dick Fontaine's THE ORNETTE COLEMAN TRIO, featuring such major talents as Charley Haden, Don Cherry, and Darnel Coleman, Ornette's son. Completed in 1985, ORNETTE MADE IN AMERICA was released on a general basis two years later.
