Rating: 4/5 -- Joseph L Mankiewicz's adaptation of the Frank Loesser Broadway musical, itself adapted from Damon Runyon stories, looks a treat. The wonder of the film is that it combines widescreen colour and opulence with an earthy, street-level humour. Full Review

Rating: 5/5 -- The showtunes are weapons-grade: especially Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat, which never fails to get any audience on its feet. A must. Full Review

The script is perhaps even better than most of the musical numbers, crackling with the Damon Runyon-style dialogue and with the colour of the stories on which Ben Hecht based his screenplay. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- Brando wasn't producer Sam Goldwyn's first choice as Sky (that was Gene Kelly) but he acquits himself outstandingly. Full Review

A handsome and funny wide-screen version of the famous Broadway hit. It's over-long at two and a half hours but liberally loaded with laughter and sentiment in the appropriate Damon Runyon tradition. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Veteran gambler Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) takes a bet from Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) that he can win the affection of a "soldier" (Jean Simmons) in the Salvation Army, setting himself up to lose both his money and his heart. Romance is the last thing the gambler and the missionary expect, and they fight against their attraction for all they're worth in singing and dancing numbers.
