Look past the frilly costumes and posh accents of The Bostonians and you'll find a battle of the sexes that remains relevant into the twenty-first century.

Film Inquiry
The women's movement as a whole is... presented in the film as the creature of a couple of reporters on the make and a handful of aristocratic Boston spinsters whose other pet causes include faith healing.

''The Bostonians,'' which opens today at Cinema I, unfolds elegantly but not always smoothly... But the performances, especially that of the astonishing Miss Redgrave, generate an urgency and momentum to match Mr. James's own.

James' story is so fascinating and Redgrave so urgently fine that you can lose sight of these lapses and have an eminently satisfying time.

Rating: 3/4 --
Reeve is earnest if not entirely believable in a pivotal role, but Redgrave and Potter are excellent.

Rating: C+ --
Merchant Ivory screen adaptation of Henry James' novel is handsome, but suffers from the miscasting of Christopher Reeve and Madeleine Potter, though Vanessa Redgrave is decent.

Product Description:
Director James Ivory brings Henry James's classic novel THE BOSTONIANS to the screen in this evocative, historical adaptation filled with exciting, exacting performances. The story centers on the fight between an ardent feminist and a southern gentleman for a charismatic faith healer's daughter. Basil Ransom (Christopher Reeve), a conservative lawyer, woos the youthful, charming, and articulate Verena Tarrant (Madeleine Potter in her first film role), but he objects to her involvement in the suffragist movement and to Olive Chancellor (Vanessa Redgrave), Verena's feminist mentor. The relationship between Redgrave, Reeve, and Potter is mesmerizing to watch, and Reeve, better known for his role in SUPERMAN, is handsomely dynamic as the lover Verena cannot deny. Jessica Tandy, Linda Hunt, and Nancy Marchand costar in this strong ensemble film shot in stunning New England locations. THE BOSTONIANS was Merchant Ivory Productions' second adaptation of a Henry James novel, following THE EUROPEANS.
