Modern jazz is often criticized as being too serious or "artsy." Legendary pianist Horace Silver has answered the call with his delightful "JAZZ...HAS...A SENSE OF HUMOR," his debut on Verve. While Silver's signature brand of funky swing should be enough to melt even the most stoic of moods, it is his lyrics, penned for reading along to the pianist's memorable melodies, which take the cake. The tunes themselves are expertly played by Silver and his quintet, which includes trumpet ace Ryan Kisor and newcomer Jimmy Greene on saxophone, but when coupled with the sometimes risquT lyrics hidden within the booklet, it is easy to see where Silver got his title. In particular, the opener "Satisfaction Guaranteed," the spirited "Ah-Ma-Tell," and, of course, "I Love Annie's Fanny" are sure to invoke a guffaw or two. Also included is the "The Mama Suite," which contains three separate movements dedicated to the various-sized ladies Silver has undoubtedly observed with his twinkling eye. Above all, this set does exactly what Silver intended: it offers a smile and a chance to forget our troubles.
