Like first love, this study of the growing pains of the leather jacket-bobby soxer Brooklyn high school set of 1957 is, by turns, cheerful, confused, juvenile and never fully realized.

Rating: 3/4 -- The film is a character piece that wanders from place to place with no single impetus, although one gets the feeling that this technique is intentional. Full Review

A small masterpiece that places the mood and general ethos of the '50s with absolute precision and total affection. Full Review

Affectionately done and thankfully short, since it's episodic. Full Review

Not too much finesse distinguishes the script, which carries neither warmth nor particular interest for the various characters. Full Review

The movie is adept at portraying aimlessness, getting at the greasy anomie that was so much a part of that time. But there is a lack of ambition, as if no one involved in creating the film wanted to cut deeper than a little double-edged nostalgia. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Before there was a "Rocky" or "The Fonz", two unknown actors named Sylvester Stallone and Henry Winkler starred in their first major screen roles. Soon they would rule the box office and the airways, but before they were kings, they were The Lords Of Flatbush! Clad in blue jeans, black leather jackets and bad attitudes, Stanley (Stallone), Butchey (Winkler), Chico (Perry King) and Wimpy (Paul Mace) are a 1950s Brooklyn "gang" of four cool, sexy rebels. Despite their tough appearance, those boys just want to have fun, but reality - a.k.a. adulthood - rears its ugly head when Stanley's steady informs him they have to get married, and blue-collar Chico falls for a beautiful blonde (Susan Blakely) from the right side of the tracks.
