It certainly is a picture that can be truthfully billed as an 'all-star production" without fear of a comeback. Full Review
Certain to disappoint any real Holmes fans out there. Full Review
While Barrymore has the profile and the intent, intelligent focus we recognize, this is a Holmes mystery without the deerstalker cap, the Meerschaum pipe or the faithful Watson at his side. Full Review

Sherlock Holmes is interesting as a picture chiefly because of the cast and the exteriors. Full Review

There are several problems, but none of them is of compelling interest, and they are solved as much by the superior knowledge and power of the playwright as by anything Sherlock Holmes is seen to do. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:
When a young prince is accused of a crime that could embroil him in international scandal, debonair supersleuth Sherlock Holmes comes to his aid, and quickly discovers that behind the incident lurks a criminal mastermind eager to reduce Western civilization to anarchy. Adapted from the hugely popular stage version of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories (by William Gillette), Sherlock Holmes not only provided Barrymore with one of his most prestigious early roles, but also presented the screen debuts of two notable actors: William Powell (The Thin Man) and Roland Young (Topper). Sherlock Holmes was mastered from a 35mm restoration by the George Eastman House Motion Picture Department, and is accompanied by a score by Ben Model, performed on the Miditzer Virtual Theatre Organ.
Hollywood icon John Barrymore stars as literary legend Sherlock Holmes in this 1922 silent film based on a stage play. When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famed detective investigates the framing of a young prince in a murder case, the sleuth uncovers a more sinister, far-reaching plot than he would have ever imagined! SHERLOCK HOLMES also marks the debuts of future greats William Powell (THE THIN MAN) and Roland Young (TOPPER).
