Entertainment Reviews:
BLACK NATIVITY is a musical too, and on that front there are gifts aplenty. Hudson's voice lifts the proceedings every time she sings.
Los Angeles Times
Characters break into song in everyday settings, and these scenes work surprisingly well, partly because Hudson and Latimore are such gifted musical performers.
Hollywood Reporter
Rating: 2/5 --
Points for dogged credulity: whether trying to pass off Times Square as Judea or Tyrese "Fast & Furious" Gibson as the Angel Gabriel, it sincerely believes it. You, of course, are at liberty not to.

Guardian
3 stars out of 4 -- The film's modern-day retelling of Christ's birth is sprinkled with lines from Hughes' poetry and the stage production's script, as well as shout-outs to the hero's namesake. These all resonate, thanks to the setting: Harlem.

Rating: 2.5/5 --
To wrap up, Black Nativity isn't the best holiday film we have this season and probably won't clean up at the cinema because in the end it's just a quite average movie.

Even the movie's most wretched characters glow in the Harlem lamplight.

"Black Nativity," loosely based on a play by Langston Hughes, is brought beautifully to life by writer/director Kasi Lemmons, a true auteur in every sense of the word.

Product Description:
Director Kasi Lemmons updates Langston Hughes' acclaimed play for the screen in this inspirational musical drama with a positive spiritual message. Langston (Jacob Latimore) is a street-smart Baltimore teen who lives with his single mother Naima (Jennifer Hudson). It's Christmas, and this year Jordan is traveling to New York City for a stay with his distant relatives Reverend Cornell (Forest Whitaker) and Aretha Cobbs (Angela Bassett). When Reverent Cornell's strict rules prove too oppressive for the rebellious teen to handle, however, Jordan decides he'd rather spend the holidays with his mother, and embarks on an eye-opening journey that teaches him the true importance of faith and family.
